Prepping for flying in the Rocky mountains

August 2, 2025

Next week I am being sent to the British Columbia Interior to start night flying in the Rocky Mountain. For the time being, I am flying in Ontario with a short stint next in central Alberta. Tonight I meet a new pilot who has just arrived from Alberta. We will be paired together for a few days, then I will leave on Monday to go back home for a day. Then, off to Alberta, then...off to the mountains. I have spent a small amount of time flying in the mountains, but nothing of this nature. It will consist of flying: at night, in the valleys occassionaly, over top the peaks, in all weather conditions, in a twin piston. It will be fun, challenging, risky, intense, and will force me to make constant real-time decisions (even more-so than a pilot already has to...major decisions every few minutes). Challenges I foresee:

In order to prepare even more than my background and training has allowed, I am going to immerse myself in all the material that I can to mentally and physically prepare. I have downloaded "Mountain Flying" by Sparky Imeson to read. I am going to focus as well on reading up on survival techniques, SAR, and other such things. Happy flying, captainmcphail
